Laptop RAM and SSD upgrade compatibility

Last updated September 25, 2026 · Catalog figures are live from the WorksTogether database

In short

  • RAM fits only if the laptop has a free memory slot of the same type (DDR4 or DDR5) and form factor (usually SO-DIMM), and the module stays within the laptop's maximum capacity. Soldered memory cannot be upgraded.
  • A faster module works but runs at the laptop's highest supported speed. ECC modules need a laptop that supports ECC.
  • An SSD fits only if the slot supports its interface (NVMe or SATA) and length (M.2 2230, 2242 or 2280). A newer PCIe generation works in an older slot at the slot's speed.

RAM upgrade checklist

CheckWhat must matchIf it does not
Memory typeDDR4 module for a DDR4 slot, DDR5 for DDR5. The generations are keyed differently and are not interchangeable.Does not fit / not compatible
Form factorSO-DIMM modules for SO-DIMM slots. CAMM2 / LPCAMM2 are different, newer modules.Not compatible
Upgradable at allThe laptop needs at least one memory slot. LPDDR memory is almost always soldered to the board. No upgrade possible
CapacityModule size within the laptop's stated maximum memory (minus any soldered memory it keeps). Not supported by the manufacturer
SpeedAny speed the laptop supports; a faster module is clocked down to the laptop's maximum.Works, at the lower speed
ECCMost laptops use non-ECC memory; ECC modules only where the laptop supports ECC.May not work — WorksTogether answers Unknown unless the laptop's ECC support is verified

In the WorksTogether catalog, 92 laptops have verified DDR5 memory and 1 verified DDR4; 70 have a verified SO-DIMM slot and 56 are verified as soldered-only (no memory slot). The catalog lists 34 memory modules, 6 of them ECC. ECC support is verified on 0 laptops, which is why ECC modules are usually answered Unknown.

SSD upgrade checklist

CheckWhat must matchIf it does not
InterfaceAn NVMe SSD needs an M.2 slot wired for PCIe/NVMe; a SATA SSD needs a SATA-capable slot or a 2.5-inch drive bay. "M.2" alone says nothing about the interface. Not compatible
Form factorThe drive length must be one the slot supports: M.2 2230 (22 × 30 mm), 2242 (22 × 42 mm) or 2280 (22 × 80 mm); 2.5-inch drives need a drive bay.Does not fit
PCIe generationAny generation works: PCIe is backward compatible. A PCIe 5.0 drive in a PCIe 4.0 slot runs at PCIe 4.0 speed.Works, at the slot's speed
CapacityDrive size within the maximum capacity the manufacturer states for the slot. Not supported by the manufacturer
ThicknessDrives sold with a heatsink are usually too thick for laptops.WorksTogether skips heatsink versions

The catalog lists 45 SSDs (33 NVMe, 12 SATA).

Real upgrade checks

10 RAM and 23 SSD upgrade checks are published. A selection across verdicts:

How WorksTogether decides

RAM and SSD verdicts use deterministic technical rules on the verified specifications of both products, in this order: a verified hard mismatch (memory type, form factor, soldered memory, capacity, interface, drive length) is “Not compatible”; a speed or PCIe-generation limit is “Partially compatible”; a full match is “Compatible”. When the laptop's specifications do not settle the question — or an ECC module meets a laptop without verified ECC support — the answer is “Unknown”.

Where the data comes from

Every product figure on WorksTogether comes from the manufacturer's own specification pages; nothing is taken from retailers or inferred from product names, and each check links to its official sources.
